Mark Zuckerberg’s Bold Proposal to Skyrocket Facebook Engagement: Wiping Friends Lists

Are you tired of seeing the same friends on your Facebook timeline every day? Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg once considered wiping everyone’s friends’ lists to give the platform a fresh start! In 2022, Zuckerberg floated this “potentially crazy idea” to boost Facebook usage amid concerns about its decreasing cultural relevance.
The suggestion to delete all friends lists was discussed during Meta’s antitrust trial, where Zuckerberg expressed his worries about the company’s future success if Facebook faltered. The CEO proposed a phased approach, starting with a trial in a smaller country to gauge user reactions.
However, the head of Facebook, Tom Allison, questioned the viability of the idea, citing the importance of the friend use case to Instagram. Despite the initial consideration, Zuckerberg later mentioned that the plan was never implemented.
Instead of wiping friends lists, Meta has been focusing on other strategies to improve the Facebook experience, such as introducing a revamped friends tab that prioritizes user connections over algorithmic content. Zuckerberg’s goal for the platform this year is to “get back to some OG Facebook” and enhance the user experience.
