Google is making waves in its organization by offering buyouts to US-based employees in its Search department and other key divisions. The buyouts, which are being presented as a “voluntary exit program,” are currently not extended to certain areas like DeepMind, Google Cloud, and YouTube.
However, employees in Google’s platforms and services group are among those who have been recently offered buyouts. This move follows earlier buyout offers aimed at this group, which includes Android and the Pixel line of devices. The company’s decision to roll out these buyouts has left many wondering if more layoffs will follow in the coming weeks.
Some employees are being offered a minimum of 14 weeks’ pay and have until July 1st to decide on their participation in the buyout program. On another note, other Google divisions, including YouTube, are now requiring US employees within a 50-mile radius of an office to return to work at least three days a week by September or face potential layoffs with severance packages.
Nick Fox, the head of Google’s broader “Knowledge and Information” group that encompasses Search, described the buyout program as a “supportive exit path” for employees who may opt for it. This initiative reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to streamline its operations and adjust to changing work dynamics.
